Referrer Checking

Companies spend a tremendous amount of time, money, and energy developing content for their web sites which deserves to be protected from unauthorized use. All too often, third party web sites embed others' content, linking directly to the origin site, without permission. The third party web sites benefit from the content, while the original owner pays the cost of distribution, without the benefit of monetizing the visitors.

Panther's "Referrer Checking" protects your content so that it can be monetized only by your site and reduces your costs as the legitimate owner of the content.

Overview

Referrer Checking prevents unauthorized sites from linking to content by placing content on a particular Panther Accelerated Domain (PAD) via special handling rules. Sites linking to the content are identified through the HTTP "Referrer" header. Panther's CDN reads this header and applies specific rules to grant or deny access to the content.

You create a white list or black list (but not both), and our CDN performs the comparison based on regular expression matching. When using a black list scenario, if the "Referrer" header matches an item on the list, the user is denied access to the content. Alternatively when using a white list scenario, if the "Referrer" header matches an item on the list, then a user is granted access to the content.
